Chassis Number

Added a four point passenger harness to my order today as I decided that it wasn't worth the hassle of fitting it afterwards (you have to remove the roll cage and drop the rear suspension apparently). I also found out that my chassis number is 22691. Which is good to know, but means nothing.

Had an email about Creation Motorsport who are offering race/track day tuition, including Academy competitors. They have done a day at Hethel apparently, and are planning one at Goodwood. I'll try to get some feedback on them from 2003 competitors.

Torque wrench

Bought a Britool torque wrench. Seemed a bit of a bargain at ?39.99, discounted from ?143.35! It comes in a very impressive red box, with it's own calibration certificate. I've no idea whether it's actually any good though.

Academy 2004 production starts, more tools

One of the 2004 Academy regulars on Blatchat has received his second deposit letter with the build scheduled for mid-September. Given that I was expecting to take delivery of my kit early September, this doesn't bode well.

Bought a nice red three drawer tool chest from Halfords for my sockets etc., and a large Black and Decker tool trolley thing for the stuff that is now starting to clutter up the garage - like axle stands, torque wrench in massive case, pump, etc. etc.

Second part of evo article posted

I've scanned and posted the second part of the evo article on the 2003 Academy which covers Round 1 at Hethel.

Page 1, Page 2, Page 3.

You can find the first part attached to the May 15th entry.

Creation Motorsport

It is clear from the latest evo article that Creation Motorsport are providing tuition for some of the Academy competitors - they were present at the BookaTrack day at Hethel just before the 1st Academy round. From one piece of feedback I had, they charge ?50 for two sessions.

Apparently they are at Goodwood this Saturday which will no doubt be heavily patronised by Academy competitors given that Group 2 Round 2 is there on 28th June.

Second deposit required!

Got my second deposit letter from Caterham today, asking me for my further ?3000 deposit.

According to the letter, delivery/collection is scheduled for mid September 2003. Later than I'd hoped, but better than I'd feared.

Caterham never seem to mention that Caterham Midlands exist - no mention on the headed paper and it says to forward the cheque to 'the Sales Office' which is Surrey.

Second deposit paid - no turning back

I paid the second deposit today so that's it; well into 'non-returnable' terrirtory now. I have requested a build manual now rather than waiting for one to come with the car when it is delivered so that I can see what I'm letting myself in for. It really has hit me now just how far away September is.

Second deposit confirmation

Received confirmation of my second deposit today, and the letter says that they will contact me 'shortly' to arrange a convenient delivery date!

I can only change my spec in 'exceptional circumstances', but I don't have anything with which to check my spec - so I've emailed and asked for a breakdown.

No mention of the build manual I'd asked for.

Academy 2003 - Goodwood Sprint

Finally got along to my first Academy event on Saturday - the sprint at Goodwood.

Sign on was at 07:30 (!), but we didn't manage to get there until around 12:30 just as lunch was starting. As it happened, the morning runs had been delayed by a few accidents and so there hadn't been any timed runs for the Academy competitors.

Simon and Brett from Caterham Midlands were busy putting back a competitor's car who had had an unfortunate incident in practice. It was impressive to see the radiator, steering rack and various suspension components being replaced in time for the first timed run!

The weather was wonderful and it was a pleasure to wander around - although you can certainly understand why sprints can be frustrating. If I'd been there at 07:30 I would have been tearing my hair out by 13:30.

Even more keen on getting my car and getting on with it now!
